Crochet Shells & Swirls Doily Placemat - Free Pattern



Hello everyone!😉
Today I have the Shells & Swirls Doily Placemat crochet pattern to share with you. It is made in only 16 rounds using sport weight (size 2) yarn and a 3 mm crochet hook. All you need to start is a crochet hook and some yarn or thread in the color of your choice.

Written Pattern:

Size: The doily measures approx. 35 cm (13.8 inches) in diameter.

Skill Level: Easy (advanced beginner)

Materials Used:


  • Sport weight yarn, size 2 - fine. I used Nako Fiore 25% linen, 35% cotton, 40% bamboo viscose yarn. 55 grams (165 meters approx.) of yarn needed for this pattern.
  • 3mm crochet hook.
  • Yarn needle or Latch hook for weaving in ends. Or, you can use a crochet hook.


  • Abbreviations (US terms):

    sk - skip
    sp./sps. - space / spaces
    st./sts - stitch / stitches
    ch - chain
    sl st. - slip stitch
    sc - single crochet
    dc - double crochet
    trc - treble crochet

    (  )* - repeat instructions between the brackets the number of times indicated.








    Instructions:

    Note that the doily might curl up at some points of making it. Don't worry, it will flatten back down when further rounds are done!


    Start with ch5, sl st. in first ch to form a ring. Or, you can make a magic (adjustable) loop.

    Round 1: ch4 (counts as 1dc + ch1), 
    (1dc, ch1)* repeat 11 times in ring.
    Join with a sl st. in 3rd ch of beginning ch4.
    (12dc sts; 12 ch1 sps.)

    Round 2: sl st. in next ch1 sp., ch3 (counts as 1dc), 1dc in same ch1 sp., ch2,
    (sk next st., 2dc in next ch1 sp., ch2)* repeat 11 times around.
    Join with a sl st. in 3rd ch of beginning ch3.
    (24dc sts; 12 ch2 sps.)

    Round 3: sl st. in next st., ch3 (counts as 1dc), 2dc in next ch2 sp., ch2,
    (sk next st., 1dc in next st., 2dc in next ch2 sp., ch2)* repeat 11 times around.
    Join with a sl st. in 3rd ch of beginning ch3.
    (36dc sts; 12 ch2 sps.)

    Round 4: sl st. in next st., ch3 (counts as 1dc), 1dc in next st., 2dc in next ch2 sp., ch2,
    (sk next st., 1dc in next 2 sts, 2dc in next ch2 sp., ch2)* repeat 11 times around.
    Join with a sl st. in 3rd ch of beginning ch3.
    (48dc sts; 12 ch2 sps.)

    Round 5: sl st. in next st., ch3 (counts as 1dc), 1dc in next 2 sts, 2dc in next ch2 sp., ch2,
    (sk next st., 1dc in next 3 sts, 2dc in next ch2 sp., ch2)* repeat 11 times around.
    Join with a sl st. in 3rd ch of beginning ch3.
    (60dc sts; 12 ch2 sps.)

    Round 6: sl st. in next st., ch3 (counts as 1dc), 1dc in next 3 sts, 2dc in next ch2 sp., ch2,
    (sk next st., 1dc in next 4 sts, 2dc in next ch2 sp., ch2)* repeat 11 times around.
    Join with a sl st. in 3rd ch of beginning ch3.
    (72dc sts; 12 ch2 sps.)

    Round 7: sl st. in next st., ch3 (counts as 1dc), 1dc in next 4 sts, 2dc in next ch2 sp., ch2,
    (sk next st., 1dc in next 5 sts, 2dc in next ch2 sp., ch2)* repeat 11 times around.
    Join with a sl st. in 3rd ch of beginning ch3.
    (84dc sts; 12 ch2 sps.)

    Round 8: sl st. in next st., ch3 (counts as 1dc), 1dc in next 5 sts, 2dc in next ch2 sp., ch2,
    (sk next st., 1dc in next 6 sts, 2dc in next ch2 sp., ch2)* repeat 11 times around.
    Join with a sl st. in 3rd ch of beginning ch3.
    (96dc sts; 12 ch2 sps.)

    Round 9: sl st. in next st., ch3 (counts as 1dc), 1dc in next 6 sts, 2dc in next ch2 sp., ch2,
    (sk next st., 1dc in next 7 sts, 2dc in next ch2 sp., ch2)* repeat 11 times around.
    Join with a sl st. in 3rd ch of beginning ch3.
    (108dc sts; 12 ch2 sps.)

    Round 10: sl st. in next st., ch3 (counts as 1dc), 1dc in next 7 sts, 2dc in next ch2 sp., ch2,
    (sk next st., 1dc in next 8 sts, 2dc in next ch2 sp., ch2)* repeat 11 times around.
    Join with a sl st. in 3rd ch of beginning ch3.
    (120dc sts; 12 ch2 sps.)

    Round 11: ch1 (doesn't count as a st.), 1sc in same st.,
    1sc in each st, 2sc in each ch2 sp. around.
    Join with a sl st. in first sc st. at the beginning of the round.
    (144sc sts)

    Round 12: ch1 (doesn't count as a st.), 1sc in same st., sk next 2 sts, (3dc, ch1, 3dc) in next st.,
    (sk next 2 sts, 1sc in next st., sk next 2 sts, (3dc, ch1, 3dc) in next st.)* repeat 23 times around.
    Join with a sl st. in first sc st. at the beginning of round.

    Round 13: ch6 (counts as 1dc + ch3), 1dc in same st., ch3, sk next 3 sts, 1sc in next ch1 sp., ch3,
    (sk next 3 sts, (1dc, ch3, 1dc) in next st., ch3, sk next 3 sts, 1sc in next ch1 sp., ch3)* repeat 23 times around.
    Join with sl st. in 3rd ch of beginning ch6.

    Round 14: sl st. in next ch3 sp., ch3 (counts as 1dc), (3dc, ch1, 4dc) in same ch3 sp., sk next st., 1sc in next ch3 sp., ch3, sk next st., 1sc in next ch3 sp.,
    (sk next st., (4dc, ch1, 4dc) in next ch3 sp., sk next st.,1sc in next ch3 sp., ch3, sk next st., 1sc in next ch3 sp.)* repeat 23 times around.
    Join with a sl st. in 3rd ch of beginning ch3.

    Round 15: sl st. in next 3 sts, sl st. in next ch1 sp., ch1 (doesn't count as a st.), 1sc in same ch1 sp., ch3, sk next 5 sts, (1dc, ch3, 1dc) in next ch3 sp., ch3,
    (sk next 5 sts, 1sc in next ch1 sp., ch3, sk next 5 sts, (1dc, ch3, 1dc) in next ch3 sp., ch3)* repeat 23 times around.
    Join with a sl st. in first sc st. at the beginning of round.

    Round 16: ch1 (doesn't count as a st.), 1sc in same st., sk next ch3, sk next st., 10trc in next ch3 sp.,
    (sk next st., sk next ch3, 1sc in next st., sk next ch3, sk next st., 10trc in next ch3 sp.)* repeat 23 times around.
    Join with a sl st. in first sc st. at the beginning of round, ch1.

    Fasten off, weave in all ends.
